UN:Me: An Psychological Thriller Merging Survival Horror with Among Us Mechanics
The recent Day of the Devs digital showcase revealed several fascinating upcoming titles, but one in particular has seized attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo adventure seems to fuse together the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.
"It's a distinctive game where a girl containing multiple human souls inside her must escape from a labyrinth of the psyche," states producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Fractured Consciousness
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of high school age. Within her reside four distinct souls, all possessing unique anxieties and motivations. These souls can take over spontaneously, unleashing their deep-seated phobias upon her suddenly.
Based on showcased footage, much of the narrative unfolds within a creepy hospital, though other scenes depict the protagonist exploring a abandoned chapel.
An Environment of Individual Dread
"What makes you afraid of? What makes you uncomfortable?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. Authority figures. Things that appear minor to others can trigger a deep instinct within us. This game delves into that idea — fears that are specific to every individual."
The central gameplay loop involves controlling the persona that emerges at a particular time. However, these souls will switch involuntarily as you play. While exploring, each soul's fears become exaggerated and attack the protagonist one after another. When the soul changes, so does the specific fear the player experiences.
Eerie Aesthetics and a Fatal Decision
Initially, UN:Me shares noticeable aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is populated by nurses all sporting the identical visage, with unnervingly wide grins. Patients in the lobby have large blooms growing from their heads should be. Floral motifs are a recurring theme, juxtaposing organic elegance with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a unique mechanic. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities inhabiting the protagonist is the "real" one. "Each of the personas claims that the body belongs to them," notes a creator. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is authentic."
Once players have deduced a soul is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. But, since every entity can lie or hide the truth, it is very easy to choose incorrectly.
"Perhaps you've already destroyed the real [soul] with your own hands," the narration states. "The last one remaining might be a fake. Either way, your decisions are irreversible."
UN:Me does not yet have a publicly announced release date, but it is available to follow on digital storefronts.
