A comprehensive search and rescue operation is currently under way in the Caribbean waters for two lost sailing vessels loaded with relief goods traveling from Mexico to the island of Cuba.

Military Search Missions Launched

The Mexican government has dispatched naval assets and reconnaissance aircraft to find the Friendship and Tigger Moth, which were transporting no fewer than 9 personnel, per a military release.

The ships had been projected to arrive in Cuba's capital on the early part of the week, but there has been a complete lack of contact from them and no official word of their safe arrival, the statement clarified.

The Situation of Relief to the Island

Cuba has leaned on Mexico's over recent weeks, as the country struggles through widespread power outages across the country.

"The crews and captains are veteran seafarers, and the two ships are equipped with proper safety systems and communication devices," a representative associated with the mission said.

The nine individuals on board are citizens of France, Poland, the United States, and Cuba. Mexico said it has opened communications with coast guard agencies from each country along with their embassy officials.

"We are co-operating fully with the officials and continue to be hopeful in the capability of the sailors to reach Havana safely," the spokesperson added.

Earlier Humanitarian Delivery

Previously that week, the Cuban authorities widely celebrated and warmly received a separate vessel that had carried 14 tonnes of humanitarian aid to the island.

That ship, called "a modern Granma" following the name of the yacht in which the revolutionary leader landed in Cuba to launch the Cuban Revolution in the 1950s, brought photovoltaic panels, medicines, infant formula, cycles and foodstuffs.

Wider Geopolitical Backdrop

Volunteers and NGOs have largely spearheaded efforts to deliver critical assistance to Cuba beginning in January, when a oil sanctions on the country began.

Global bodies have since raised alarms about "dire" supply shortages, with in excess of 50k surgeries postponed in Cuba because of electricity supply constraints.

Political tensions have intensified over the past months, with statements from several leaders underscoring the complicated nature of relations.

In response to recent statements, a high-ranking official from Cuba stated firmly that "the political system of Cuba is non-negotiable."

Reports suggest that preliminary steps of discussions were initiated, although their ongoing development remains unclear.

The maritime authorities stated it was committed to using every available asset at its command to discover the boats and guarantee the well-being of the sailors.

To date, there has been no public statement on the missing boats by the government in Havana.
