This Swine Life: Hog Named 6-7 Pardoned by Miami-Dade Leader.
Although not quite at the same level as pardoning Thanksgiving turkeys, but the mayor of Miami-Dade experienced a ceremonial pardon event this week by ceremoniously saving the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“The swine has done no wrong. She deserves this act of mercy. She has committed zero crimes,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with clear references to the extraordinary and sizable number of executive clemencies issued since the onset of a current administration.
“If we disregard eating half a dozen apples per day,” she went on. “Let this swine have a lengthy and joyful existence away from worry.”
This ceremony, simultaneously observing and challenging the area's customary feast of eating roast pork during the holidays, was established to emulate the traditional fowl clemency at the White House.
The pig, donated by a first responder, was named for the popular vernacular phrase of young people yelling “six seven” – deriving from a hip-hop line – often seemingly at random. The trend became so widespread that a major dictionary recently made “6-7” its top term for the year.
A Future Secured
The pardoned swine is now destined to live out its days at a countryside refuge “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the organizers' announcement.
“The annual pig pardon has become a cherished method to kick off the festive period,” said Eric Castellanos, in a decidedly positive message.
“It embodies the character of Miami: happy, multicultural, and based in heritage that unite the community. Annually, we are honored to observe heritage and mercy in a way only Miami can.”
Attendees enjoyed a plant-based fare of spinach croquetas and cafecito as they toasted Six Seven’s big moment.
