The beloved crime series AC-12 is officially returning for its 7th season, confirmed by the BBC.

A brand new six-part series created by Jed Mercurio will begin filming in Northern Ireland this spring, as confirmed by the production team.

Vicky McClure shared her enthusiasm about the return, stating she was "so excited" about the show's renewal. Adrian Dunbar added, "What a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be reuniting together next year."

The previous series concluded in recent years with a final episode that attracted over 17 million audience members. Speculation about a new season have been widespread for some time, but confirmation only arrived this week.

Fresh Obstacles for The Team

Series seven will open with AC-12 no longer existing and rebranded as the new police oversight body, according to production details.

Steve Arnott, Kate Fleming, and Adrian Dunbar's part continue tasked to tackle misconduct within the police force.

Their work "has never been more difficult", and under these circumstances, these officers are assigned their "most delicate case to date."

New Character and Intricate Plot

An additional officer, Det Insp Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charismatic officer known for takedowns of criminal networks, is accused of misusing his authority to act as a sexual predator.

However, this investigation could be a intentional diversion from a larger danger still operating in the background, plot details hinted.

In a statement, Jed Mercurio commented: "Everyone involved are deeply thankful to the dedicated viewers."

"It's an honor to have had countless followers watch the ups and downs of AC-12 over six previous seasons and we are thrilled to be returning for a new installment."

Mercurio continued: "Corruption in the UK was thought to be over while Line of Duty was not airing, so I've been compelled to use my creativity."

Cast Reactions

Martin Compston called appearing in the police drama as "the role of a career".

"Not only the show's success but the people I've collaborated with I now call dear friends."

"I can't wait to pull the waistcoat on again and reunite with everyone," he added.

Vicky McClure stated: "Obviously I'm very happy Line of Duty is returning! Can't wait to work with the creator, Martin and Dunbar again. Belfast, we'll be there shortly!"

The veteran actor noted: "While anticipating the AC-12 return, how exciting it is to know that the Three Amigos will be working together next year."

"Delighted with the news and looking forward to those unexpected twists and turns."

Show History

Line of Duty premiered in 2012 and became one of the most popular television series of the last decade, featuring notable actors such as Lennie James.

Broadcasters haven't revealed when the new season will premiere.

The conclusion of series six brought the long-running storyline about the search for criminal mastermind known as "H" to a conclusion, and producers said at the moment there were no plans for further series.

However, the corporation announced on Tuesday that a new season is now being produced.
