The Creators of Baldur's Gate 3 Clarifies Its Application of Generative AI for Upcoming Divinity Game
The team behind acclaimed titles like Baldur's Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin just shown its next major project, sparking immense excitement within the player base. However, recent remarks from the company's figurehead have brought a new dimension to the discussion, addressing the studio's philosophy toward machine learning.
A Tool for Ideation, Not Replacement
In a latest clarification, the studio's founder outlined that the developer is employing generative AI for certain preliminary purposes. These include fleshing out pitch decks, creating initial concept art, and creating temporary copy.
Crucially, Vincke made clear that the end assets in the game will be crafted entirely by real creatives. "Our team is writing all the content ourselves," he affirmed.
Larian is continuously increasing our roster of storytellers and are currently forming writing teams.
Given that visual development is being specifically mentioned — we presently have over twenty concept artists and have roles to fill for additional artists.
Everything we do is additive and aimed at enabling creatives to spend more time on the creative process.
Any machine learning application implemented properly is additive to a creative team routine, not a substitute for their skill.
Tempering Reactions with Clear Intent
The revelation of AI usage originally provoked unease among a segment of the player base. In response, Vincke provided further clarification on social media.
"We use these tools to explore references, just like we use search engines and reference books," he stated. "During the very early planning process we use it as a simple sketch for composition which we then replace with original artwork."
He added, "Larian brings on creatives for their unique talent, not for their willingness to follow what a algorithm proposes."
Focused Uses for Machine Learning
Vincke had earlier broken down the company's focused method to AI and ML, categorizing its use into primary functions:
- Handling Monotonous Jobs: This includes refining animations, dialogue cleanup, and Larian-specific work like retargeting animations.
- Accelerated Iteration: Using technology to rapidly prototype rough models of scenarios to validate concepts before full implementation.
- Experimental Frontiers: Researching how AI could one day enhance innovative reactivity, particularly in simulating unforeseen permutations in a complex RPG.
He specifically affirmed that central narrative areas — like visual art — are are in no way fields where the company is reducing human talent. Conversely, Larian is expanding its staff in these very positions.
"We are not shipping a game with any AI components, and we are certainly not looking at reducing creatives to swap them out with artificial intelligence," Vincke stated definitively.
