Preparations for Trump-Putin Summit Shelved Days Following Budapest Talks Proposed

Currently exist "no arrangements" for American leader President Trump to meet Russian President Putin "in the immediate future", a White House official has declared.

Last Thursday the US president stated he and the Kremlin leader would conduct negotiations in Budapest in the coming fortnight to discuss the ongoing hostilities.

A planning session between America's top diplomat Marco Rubio and his Russian counterpart Foreign Minister Lavrov was due to be held this week - but the White House clarified the two had had a "constructive" conversation and that a meeting was no longer "needed".

The administration did not share additional specifics on why the talks had been postponed.

Background Context

The US president had discussed a Hungarian meeting over the phone with the Russian leader, a just prior to meeting Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky in the White House.

Certain accounts claimed his meeting with Zelensky had been a "heated exchange", with sources indicating the president had pressured him to cede extensive regions of eastern Ukraine as part of a settlement with Moscow.

However, on this week Trump endorsed a ceasefire proposal supported by Kyiv and European leaders to freeze the hostilities on the existing battle lines.

"Leave it as is the way it is," he stated.

Moscow has consistently objected against freezing the existing front lines.

The Russian government was only interested in "long-term, sustainable peace", Lavrov said on Tuesday, implying that freezing the front line would merely represent a temporary ceasefire.

Political Perspectives

The "root causes" of the conflict required resolution, the Russian diplomat emphasized, using Russian diplomatic language for a series of maximalist demands that include the acceptance of total Russian authority over the Donbas as well as the military reduction of the country – a non-starter for Ukraine and its EU supporters.

Zelensky said talks regarding the current lines were the "beginning of diplomacy" but that Moscow was "taking all measures" to avoid diplomacy.

He further commented the only topic that could make Moscow "take notice" was that of the provision of distance-capable munitions to Ukraine.

Military Considerations

The Russian president's unplanned conversation with the US leader recently came ahead of rumors that the US was preparing to send extended-range cruise missiles to Ukraine that could possibly hit Russian territory.

The Ukrainian leader stated it was the weapons consideration that had compelled Moscow to enter into dialogue. The conversation concerning the weapons systems had turned out to be a "strong investment" in diplomacy", he added.
