Outrage Surges as Former President Trump's Post on Director Rob Reiner Ignites Sharp Backlash

Individuals from across the partisan spectrum and the Hollywood industry are coming together to censure former President Donald Trump for his statements in the wake of the tragic deaths of esteemed filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.

A Provocative Online Statement

After the couple were found deceased at their Brentwood residence, Trump posted on social media to label the deceased director as "anguished and suffering". In a post, he claimed Reiner's death was "because of the hostility he provoked others through his massive, relentless, and untreatable affliction with a mind-crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".

His comments quickly shifted to self-praise, juxtaposing Reiner's supposed "raging obsession" and "clear paranoia" with what Trump called the "Golden Age of America".

Police Update and Detention

Police have since confirmed the detention of the couple's 32-year-old son, Nick, on suspicion of homicide in connection with the incident. It is reported his bail was established at a significant amount.

A Torrent of Condemnation from Celebrities and Politicians

The response to Trump's post was swift and harsh.

This is a disgusting and despicable statement,” said actor Patrick Schwarzenegger.

Television host Whoopi Goldberg, who described Reiner a friend, also condemned the statements. Goldberg referenced prior rhetoric from Trump about political violence, asking, "Have you no shame? Is it possible to get any lower?"

California's Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, succinctly stated, "He is a sick man."

Mirroring this sentiment, Congressman Maxwell Alejandro Frost declared, "What a contemptible piece of garbage."

Senator Chris Murphy commented, "Trump has just lost it. Now implying Rob and Michele Reiner caused their own demise because they didn’t support him. Deeply disturbing."

Criticism from His Own Political Ranks

A number of GOP lawmakers also voiced disapproval.

Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the event was "a personal tragedy, not about politics or political enemies". She also alluded to challenges with addiction and psychological well-being some families face.

Another Republican representative, Thomas Massie, called Trump's discourse "inappropriate and disgraceful" considering the circumstances. He publicly challenged others in his party to justify the comments.

Reiner's History and Views on Trump

Rob Reiner was consistently a vocal detractor of Donald Trump. In a past interview, he stated Trump was "not psychologically suited" for the office. He had also warned about the risks of autocracy if Trump return to power.

"We see authoritarianism on the rise around the world," Reiner said. "If we crumble, there’s a danger that democratic systems crumble around the world."

Despite his pointed opposition, Reiner had previously expressed "complete revulsion" and denounced political violence unequivocally following the killing of another political figure.

A Notable Connection: The Art of the Deal

Adding a element of historical irony, Michele Reiner, formerly Michele Singer, was the photographer who shot the photograph for Donald Trump's iconic book, The Art of the Deal.

Rob Reiner had once shared the story of the session, noting Trump's request for "special hairspray" while posing on a high-rise overlooking Central Park.
