New York Jets Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Shooting
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and is confident the player will recover well after being shot in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn shared that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “upbeat” during their latest talk.
“What reassures me, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn commented. “His wife and his kid, they’re in good spirits and he will walk away from this just fine.”
Glenn was unsure when Boyd could be discharged the hospital, where he is reported as serious yet stable.
“Not certain at the moment,” he added. “But I will say this, just talking to him, he felt really upbeat. Once more, that puts my mind at ease, that he feels like that and he’s talking that way.”
New York police issued surveillance images earlier this week of a suspect in the attack on the player. The reason behind the incident is still being looked into and officials stated it remains uncertain if Boyd was the intended victim. No one else was hurt as confirmed by officials.
The shooting happened just after 2am on Sunday near the famous arena and Times Square. Boyd, 29, was transported to Bellevue Hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, as reported. The shooter fled the scene.
Glenn shared Boyd has occupied his thinking “a great deal” since he heard about the shooting. Glenn added that Boyd and his wife just had a child.
“What immediately crossed my mind, he just had a kid,” Glenn remarked. “My mind went to his family, I’m thinking about his kid and my priority is his well-being. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“There’s a process to this, that I won’t detail, but It is reassuring that he will recover excellently.”
Boyd did not participate in the present campaign, his first with the Jets, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on mid-August with an injury to his shoulder that required surgery.
He signed with New York as an unrestricted free agent in March and was expected to be a significant contributor of a revamped special teams unit under Glenn and ST coordinator the special teams coach. However, he got hurt during a practice session on 2 August and was carted from the field.
Boyd continued to be present throughout the season while working his way back.
“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn stated. “In fact, he comes to the games all the time. His commitment is total. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”
Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, spent his initial four years with the Vikings after getting drafted in the seventh round by the Vikings out of Texas University in 2019. He later played for the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad later that season. Boyd inked a single-season agreement valued at $1.6 million with New York in March.
