Israelis have come together around the country to remember 24 months since the Hamas-led attack on 7 October 2023, as discussions advanced in Egypt over an end to the hostilities in Gaza.

The incident saw in excess of 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others captured away to Gaza as hostages. It was the single deadliest day for Jewish people since the World War II.

Israel reacted by beginning a armed campaign in Gaza which has claimed over 67,000 people, according to the region's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its numbers are seen as reliable by the UN and other global organizations.

"Our violent enemies have struck forcefully, but they have not defeated us," Benjamin Netanyahu remarked on Tuesday.

He also pledged to "achieve all the goals of the war: the return of all the abducted, the destruction of the Hamas government and the promise that Gaza will never again present a danger to Israel".

Remembrance Events Across Israel

The national leadership postponed state remembrance events until 16 October - after the end of the religious holiday season - but events still occurred across the country on Tuesday.

A commemorative event for the loved ones of Israelis who lost their lives in the Hamas attack was conducted in Tel Aviv. Arranged by the victims' relatives, it was aired on Israeli broadcast stations.

Some time earlier, a moment of silence was observed around the country.

Peace Talks in Egypt

Meanwhile, both sides' representatives met in the Egyptian tourist destination of the negotiation venue for a continuing round of indirect talks to examine the provisions of the proposal.

A prominent representative familiar with the negotiations indicated that an evening round of mediated discussions began at 19:00 Cairo time.

The official said the morning session finished without concrete outcomes, due to conflicting views over the proposed Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas wants to ensure Israel does not recommence combat after the opening period of the arrangement.

He noted that the talks are "difficult and have not yet deliver any significant progress," but noted that facilitators are making efforts to close the disparities between the two sides.

Key Matters in Discussions

  • An enduring halt to fighting
  • The exchange of the captives still detained by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
  • The removal of Israeli forces from Gaza
  • Measures for humanitarian aid provision
  • After-conflict management of the region

Public Sentiment

In the city's memorial area earlier, young Hagar - whose brother survived the assault on the Nova music festival, where hundreds were lost their lives and dozens more were taken hostage by Hamas fighters - explained: "Nowhere feels like home any longer and until every captive are released no one will feel safe."

"Once we see everyone home returned, we can feel relief once more. Then we can commence recover," she concluded.

Outside the leader's residence in the capital, people congregated to show their backing for the families of the hostages. Israel says forty-eight continue in detention in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are believed to be surviving.

Demonstrator a participant explained: "We must do any agreement necessary for the hostages to return. But we truly desire assurances that we will be safe."

Research now consistently show that approximately the majority of Israeli citizens want the conflict to end in as payment for the liberation of the captives.

Palestinian Conditions

At the area of the music event, mourners came together to pay their respects.

From the site, the noise of military attacks and shelling could be noticed just a brief space away in Gaza, where local people reported the severe Israeli attacks continued.

In the main city, bombardments were reported in the dawn of Tuesday in the west side district, Rimal and zone neighbourhoods and in the east side district of Sheikh Radwan, as well the settlement to the north-west.

"When the dusk falls, the fear arrives with it," displaced urban resident a local woman, whose young son was killed by an Israeli aerial attack earlier, described.

"Me and my three children are fearful of the bombings. During nighttime we are resting together, clinging, especially my smallest child who places his head on me the entire evening."

"Every second we monitor the reports to see what happened. And I'm concerned that this halt will not be achieved and that the fighting will come back to us."

Health Situation

The healthcare center in Gaza City announced it had taken in the remains of half dozen people by the midday, including a trio who lost their lives in an Israeli strike in the south part district.

Nasser hospital in the southern urban center of that area indicated another two dead people had been delivered. A person was died by Israeli forces while seeking assistance to the southern area, medical staff reported.
