Eurovision Used to Be a Campy Joy – However It Has Transformed Into a Calculated Tool to Sanitize Conflict.

An new acronym surfaced a couple of months after the start of the intensive bombing of Gaza by Israel. Referred to as WCNSF, it means “Wounded child, no surviving family”. This acronym is unique to Gaza, according to health professionals like child health specialists. Typically, it is uncommon for doctors to care for a young patient who has been bereaved of their complete family. Yet, there has been nothing “normal” regarding the devastating conflict in Gaza, where whole bloodlines have been obliterated and the number of young amputees is greater than that of any other place in the world. Nothing normal about numerous doctors returning from a sea of ruins with testimonies of children being intentionally shot at.

A Living Nightmare In Spite Of a Reported Truce

Conditions in Gaza persist as a profound humanitarian disaster. Vital medicines and equipment are being blocked those in need, and major human rights organizations have stated that atrocities are still being committed. Authorities rejects these claims, just as it disavows each claim it is charged with. But while young survivors are now suffering from the cold in temporary shelters, there is a piece of uplifting information: apparently nothing is going to stop the Eurovision song contest from continuing with its stated mission of “unity and cultural exchange.” Eurovision will continue to offer a prestigious stage for Israel, despite the fact that several European countries have now pulled out in protest. Since this, it seems, is what unity looks like.

The contest, notably prohibited Russia from competing in 2022 over the “grave situation in Ukraine”. Yet the conflict in Gaza seems treated differently.

This entire context, evidently, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.

The Show Goes On While Ignoring Profound Human Cost

Eurovision marks seven decades next year – roughly two times the projected longevity of a person in Gaza today. The event will proceed, but it will find it impossible to reclaim the whimsical pleasure it once represented. An institution that once promoted harmony has now become a blatant mechanism to sanitize military aggression.
