Ben & Jerry's Co-Founder States Unilever Halted Palestine-Themed Ice Cream Product
One of the co-founders of the famous ice cream brand Ben & Jerry's has announced how parent company the multinational conglomerate prevented the introduction for a new pro-Palestinian ice cream flavor.
The entrepreneur, who established the business alongside Jerry Greenfield, announced that he will independently develop the controversial product within a personal collection showcasing issues Ben & Jerry's has been barred from speaking out about.
Longstanding Dispute Involving Founders versus Corporate Owner
This latest development escalates the continuing tension among the world-famous ice cream maker and Unilever, the British packaged goods giant that has owned Ben & Jerry's since 2000.
Both founders have claimed how the parent company along with its ice cream arm Magnum unlawfully blocked Ben & Jerry's from "fulfilling its ethical commitments".
The Fruit Flavor becoming a Symbol for Solidarity
The entrepreneur announced through social media how he is creating an innovative watermelon-flavored sorbet, requesting consumer ideas for the product's name plus additional components.
“I'm accomplishing what they couldn't,” the founder declared from his kitchen. “I'm creating a watermelon-flavored frozen dessert that calls for permanent peace in Palestine and calls for repairing the damage that occurred in the region.”
This particular fruit has emerged as a symbol for support for the Palestinian people because of its colors, that closely resemble those of Palestine's national banner – red, green, black and white.
Previous Social Engagement plus Recent Developments
Several years ago, Ben & Jerry's ceased sales of their merchandise in areas under Israeli control, resulting in the parent company transferring their Israel business to an Israeli distributor, thus allowing continued sales within the occupied West Bank.
The new dessert series is being created through Ben's Best, the activist ice cream brand which was first established several years back for endorsing ex- US presidential candidate Bernie Sanders via the flavor "Bernie's Back".
Management Changes plus Upcoming Plans
Mr. Cohen stated that he will create additional ice cream flavors that address concerns that Ben & Jerry's was prevented from speaking about openly by Unilever.
The announcement comes after partner Jerry Greenfield stepped down from Ben & Jerry's recently, following many years of involvement, mentioning worries that the company's autonomy had been undermined after Unilever's decision to curb their advocacy work.
Previously, Mr. Cohen commented how "Jerry has a really big heart and this conflict with Unilever was deeply distressing him."
“My conscience leads me to keep working inside the company to advocate for its independence ensuring that it can fulfill its ethical purpose, the principles which it was founded on while upholding for over 40 years," he told journalists.
