According to new research, government ministers held discussions with agents of the petroleum industry over 500 times in their initial year in government – equivalent to twice every business day.

Significant Increase Compared to Prior Leadership

The research revealed that fossil fuel lobbyists were present at 48% more official discussions in the present administration's initial year compared to the previous year.

The government supported the meetings, stating that ministers held meetings with a broad spectrum of delegates from "energy sector, labor organizations and community groups to drive forward our clean energy leading initiative".

Yet, the results have raised concern among observers about the extent of the fossil fuel industry's influence over ministers at a time when ministers are working to lower bills and transition to a greener power framework.

The analysis, which draws from the government's public documentation of government discussions, also found:

• Ministers at the Net Zero Ministry met with petroleum sector advocates 274 times, with corporate delegates participating in approximately one-fourth of meetings.

• The energy minister met with oil industry representatives 250 times – with one-third of all his meetings featuring corporate delegates.

• Throughout the equivalent duration government representatives engaged with worker group agents 61 times.

• Several prominent fossil fuel companies engaged with representatives 100 times collectively.

• Fossil fuel lobbyists attended nearly all government meeting about the energy profits levy, a interim levy against the "extraordinary profits" of North Sea oil and gas companies.

An environmental politician stated: "In place of heeding experts, populations affected by climate events, or guardians eager to guarantee a safe future for their descendants, this administration is prioritising corporate representatives and profits for major petroleum companies."

Ministers asserted the findings were "misleading", claiming many of the companies listed also had sustainable power initiatives and that these were frequently the primary subject of the meetings.

An advocacy leader from an climate legal group stated: "Ministers pledged a government of service, but that doesn't mean submitting to companies making money out of environmental crisis. It's essential to stop cosying up to polluters and focus on the public."
